Assessment #2 – Journal
Assignment 2 – Journal

You are asked to keep a journal to demonstrate your learning in this course. The journal involves four areas of questions that relate to readings and to concepts covered in lectures and tutorial sessions. The journal includes a small number of self-reflective questions, but is primarily an academic piece of work. It is important not to simply re-state lecture content but to draw on scholarly sources such as books and journal articles. Web sites are generally not acceptable as citations unless they are government sites or those of official mental health organisations such as Beyond Blue. However, use of web sites should be minimal (no more than three) and they must be properly referenced. At least 15 references in total are required. Use Harvard referencing style.

It is important to work on your journal as the course progresses rather than leave it until the end of the course.

Internal students are asked to bring their journals to their tutorial class in Week 7 so the tutor can sight them as in-progress.

Journal Questions
Address the following question areas in your journal. Please note ? most questions require the use of references. Word counts for each question area are approximate guides.

1 . Models of mental health (500 words)

(a) What is the medical model of mental illness, and what are some of its strengths and weaknesses?
(b) What is a population approach to mental health?
(c) Choose one mental health problem (for example, schizophrenia, anxiety, depression). Describe its main features and recommended treatments. Explain the key social factors (i.e. social causes and social consequences) that social workers should be aware of as part of a recovery approach.

Use references for these questions.

2. Lived experiences of mental health problems (500 words)

(a) What three key points emerged as particularly important for you as a beginning social worker/human service worker in listening to the experiences of mental health problems described by individuals who spoke to the class and in the films shown during the course?
(b) Identify three ways you could take consumer experience into account when working as a social worker/human service worker?

You do not need to use references for the above questions 2 (a) and (b).

3. Practice skills in engagement, assessment and case management (500 words)

(a) Describe the key skills in engaging with clients with mental health problems.

(b) Describe the key skills in undertaking a mental health assessment in social work.

(c) Describe your experience of practicing engagement and assessment in triads. This should include:
-what you did well and why;
-what did not go so well and why;
-how you felt when you received feedback;
-areas for future development.

Other than when reflecting on your experience of practicing in the triads, use references for these questions.

4. Working with diverse populations (755 words)

(a) Choose a specific population group (young people).
Outline the main mental health problems facing this population group.

(b) What would a population approach to mental health targetting this group look like? This should include attention to all levels of intervention – primary prevention, early intervention and direct client practice.
